The Father's and Son's camp out is one weekend that our whole family looks forward to. the boy's camp and the girl's have a girl's only night. We always have fun. I really love the time that I get alone with my girls'. I stumbled across a link when I was browsing Homemaking Honeys. So, I thought that my girls would have fun making these.

You can find the Instructions at http://the-wilson-world.blogspot.com/2011/03/rainbow-waffles.html These would be great for St. Patrick's day as well.

Easter Story Cookies

To be made the evening before Easter
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup whole pecans
1 teaspoon vinegar
3 egg whites
pinch salt
1 cup white sugar
zipper baggie
wooden spoon
tape
Bible

Preheat oven to 300. Place pecans in zipper baggies and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.

Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 teaspoon vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross he was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.

Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.

Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27.

So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Ps. 34:8 and John 3:16.

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isa.1:18 and John 3:1-3.

Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matt. 27:57-60.

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matt. 27:65-66.

GO TO BED! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in there overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 and 22.

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matt. 28:1-9

Resurrection Buns

INGREDIENTS:
¼ cup sugar
1 Tbsp. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 (8 oz.) cans crescent rolls
16 large marshmallows
¼ cup butter, melted & cooled
2 Tbsp. sugar
¼ tsp. cinnamon
INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 and spray 16 muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray. (Don’t line with cupcake papers – it won’t work.) In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup sugar, flour and 1 tsp. cinnamon; mix well and set aside. Separate dough into 16 triangles. Dip 1 marshmallow in melted butter and roll in sugar mixture. Place marshmallow on shortest side of triangle. Roll up starting at shortest side of triangle and rolling to opposite point, completely covering marshmallow with dough; firmly pinch edges to seal. Dip 1 end in remaining butter; place buttered side down in sprayed muffin cup. Repeat with remaining marshmallows. In small bowl, combine 2 Tbsp. sugar and ¼ tsp. cinnamon. Sprinkle each roll with this mixture. Bake at 375 for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. (Place foil or cookie sheet on rack below muffin cups to catch spills). Remove from oven; cool 1 minute. Remove rolls from muffin cups and place on wire racks to cool. Makes 16 sweet rolls.

Here are the representations you can tell as you make these: Explain that the spices represent the spices used to anoint Jesus’ body before His burial. The marshmallow represents Jesus and His purity and sinless life. Pinching the dough around the marshmallow represents closing the tomb. As you sprinkle the spice mixture on top talk about the sweet taste of the spices and how Jesus gave us the sweetest gift we will ever receive. After the rolls have cooled and you bit into them, you will be surprised to find the center empty. The marshmallow has melted. The ‘tomb’ is empty and He is not here for He is risen. Happy Easter!

April Fools Fun

Breakfast: Magic Milk Bowl

Don't be fooled by this ordinary looking breakfast.
Squeeze several drops of liquid food coloring over the bottom of a bowl, then pour in dry cereal to conceal the droplets. When the person you are tricking sits down and pours their milk, they will not know what to think.

My lunch trick : snack switcheroo.

My kids had to be so excited to get chips in their lunch, but they were fooled.

I carefully opened the bag of chips and dumped them out into a bag for latter. I put a baggie of grapes inside with a little note. I sealed it back up using double sided tape.

What's for dinner this April Fools' Day? I wasn't out of tricks yet. How about cookie fish sticks and tart taffy peas. For dessert we had colorful cupcakes which were really mini meatloaves frosted with mashed potatoes.

Just ordinary mashed potatoes:

Turned into a colorful frosting:

Here's the recipe:
Meat Loaf
1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs
1 cup grated Monterey Jack cheese
3 tablespoons ketchup
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Potato Frosting
3 cups mashed potatoes
Food coloring
Step 1 Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Line 12 muffin tin cups with foil bake cups. Step 2 In a large bowl, mix together all of the meat loaf ingredients until well combined. Divide the mixture evenly among the lined cups (the liners should be about three quarters full). Step 3 Place the filled muffin tins on cookie sheets and bake the cupcakes for about 15 minutes or until cooked through. Step 4 Divide the mashed potatoes among three small bowls and stir a few drops of food coloring into each batch to create blue, yellow, and pink pastel frosting. Spread a generous dollop on each cupcake. Makes 12 cupcakes.

The ingredients for the Faux Fish Sticks:

Cornflakes
Sugar wafer cookies
Peanut butter
Green taffy candy (I used green apple AirHeads)
Seedless strawberry jam
Step 1 For the fish sticks, place a couple of handfuls of cornflakes in a ziplock bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Cover 2 sugar wafer cookies with peanut butter, then toss them in the cornflake crumbs to coat.

Step 2 For the peas, tear off and roll small pieces of the taffy candy into balls.

If the taffy is too stiff to work with, microwave it for about 6 seconds.

Step 3 For the ketchup, use a fork to stir a few teaspoons of the jam until it's smooth.

My kids are going to have a hard time believing me. In fact this morning I was trying to get my son out of bed and I told him get up we are having breakfast ice cream (smoothies. He told me no we are not you are just doing another April Fools. I laughed. I think that they had a very fun day. They were so excited to tell their friends.

VALENTINE'S DAY

Here are some fun ideas....

My husband and my kiddos all love Oreo's. I made Oreo Truffles. They are 'O' so good!

>

What You Need!
1 pkg. (1 lb. 2 oz.) OREO Cookies, finely crushed, divided
1 pkg. (8 oz.) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened

1 Pkg. Almond Bark, melted
Make It!
MIX 3 cups of the cookie crumbs and the cream cheese until well blended. Shape into 42 (1-inch) balls.
DIP balls in melted chocolate; place on waxed paper-covered baking sheet. (Any leftover melted chocolate can be stored in tightly covered container at room temperature and saved for another use.) Sprinkle with remaining cookie crumbs.
REFRIGERATE 1 hour or until firm. Store any leftover truffles in tightly covered container in refrigerator.
*The idea for the kisses came from Bakerella.

KERNELS OF LOVE
This was one that we did for the great teachers that my children have. We modified it. Instead of using a bag of microwave popcorn, we made caramel corn. They turned out so cute.

Here is the recipe:
Caramel Corn
INGREDIENTS FOR 3 QUARTS:
3 Qts. Popped Popcorn ½ C. Butter
1 C. Brown Sugar, Firmly Packed ¼ C. Light or Dark Corn Syrup
½ tsp. Salt ¼ tsp. Baking Soda
1 tsp. Vanilla 1 to 2 C. Nuts
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat oven to 250. Place popcorn and nuts in a large baking pan. Keep warm in oven.
Butter a 15”x10” baking pan. In a large sauce pan, melt butter over med-low heat. Stir in brown sugar, corn syrup & salt. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Simmer without stirring for 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Quickly stir in baking soda & vanilla. Slowly pour syrup over popcorn, mix well. Turn into buttered baking pan. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Cool, break apart and store in a tightly-covered container.

STUD MUFFIN

I usually try to make some kind of treat for my husband to take to work. I made him some mini muffins. **a double purpose, it was also breakfast.

I put a not on the muffins that said, "YOU ARE MY STUD MUFFIN!" Cheesy I know but Valentine's Day is the one holiday that Cheesy is good. I think that he took the note off before he placed them for everyone to eat - just a hunch!

I thought that these Valentine's were so cute. They were cheap too! We bought Dum-Dums and made them into flowers for my daughter's class.I just printed a flower out on patterned paper and punched a hole in the center for the flower.
